The Backstory: From Pen and Paper to Digital Mastery
The seeds of Guitarocracy were planted in the summer of 1995 at Saint Petersburg College in Saint Petersburg, Florida. As a young student studying classical guitar under adjunct professor Joe Braccio, I was given a simple yet profound assignment. First, I had to write down every note on the guitar fretboard by hand with pen and paper. Second, I needed to return to the next class with all the major scales mapped out, using the circle of fifths as the foundation.
Moments, sparked a lifelong obsession
What started as handwritten charts evolved into a quest to make guitar theory accessible and interactive. I was back at Saint Petersburg College pursuing a Web Development degree. I brought the concept to life digitally for the first time. Specifically, I built a fretboard scale display system using HTML and JavaScript. At that time, it was rudimentary; however, it still captured the essence of the software. Moreover, it visualized scales in a way that felt intuitive for learners and players.
Creation of a Music Theory Tool
During my further studies in Python, I revisited the concept and created a more sophisticated software version that could generate and display scales dynamically. However, something was still missing—the music itself. As a result, for many years I had dreamed of a tool that didn’t just show notes but also brought them to life, all while integrating seamlessly into creative workflows.
MIDI data on a Virtual Guitar
While working on a personal album, I found myself once again scribbling scales by hand for a song. In that frustrating moment, I vowed it would be the last time. Why not build something embedded in my DAW – a system that not only displays notes in any scale or mode but also converts MIDI input into real-time visual feedback on the fretboard? Imagine translating a piano performance into precise guitar data: note names, string positions, and fret locations, all unfolding live.
Guitarocracy, a Virtual Guitar Instrument
To realize it, I dove deep into virtual instrument development, sampling over a thousand notes across every string in two essential articulations – sustain and palm-muted – for unmatched realism. After reviewing available scripting languages, I ultimately chose Native Instruments Kontakt as the platform—a tool I’d used in production for years but never programmed in. Fortunately, with invaluable support from the Native Instruments team, the pieces came together. Fortunately, with invaluable support from the Native Instruments team, the pieces came together.
Over nine grueling months of coding, testing, and refining, Guitarocracy emerged: A Kontakt 8 instrument that displays over 140 scales and 84 modes on a virtual fretboard, supports built-in arpeggiation, and enables real-time MIDI-to-fretboard conversion. More than just software, Guitarocracy has indeed become a bridge between theory and performance, as well as between education and creation.
